The sound of gunfire were heard near the prison in the capital city, Kinshasa, as Ne Muanda Nsemi and other inmates escaped, CNN reports.
A clash between the supporters of the self -styled prophet and the police had led to his arrest in March.
Nsemi, leader of the Bundu dia Kongo movement who has a huge following in south-western DR Congo says he wants to revive the pre-colonial Kongo Kingdom in DR Congo.
He was accused of inciting violence before his arrest.
