The Best Way To Help A Snoring Partner

Having to cope with a snoring partner, can be very annoying and frustrating especially, at those nights when you are fagged out and seriously need  to sleep. You  keep tossing and turning, holding the pillow over your ears to see if you can find some sleep or end up being 'mean' by elbowing or giving them kicks, just to make him or her roll over
to the other side. Most times they only wake up staring at you with a questionable look!

Snoring is not an illness or some sort of disease, it could be as a result of blockage in the  nasal passage which then makes it difficult to breathe freely. So please, don't 'murder' your significant order in their sleep because he or she is snoring or embarrass them because that wouldn't make the snore disappear either. Your best choice is to find a way to assist him or her, after all his or her problem is supposed to be yours too.
You can help a snoring partner and ultimately yourself to find sleep by :

  • Helping to roll over: certainly not with kicks, slaps or a  punch on the face. I know enduring a snore can be annoying but remember he or she is supposed to be your loved one, not a foe. Gently help him/her adjust his sleeping position to a more comfortable one with that, at least the snore will reduce for the night.
  • Encourage exercise: If he or she is on the big size, encourage and help your spouse to exercise, the habit may be due to obesity. Having fat in the throat will only worsen the situation .By exercising, your spouse will be able to lose weight and prevent more blockage in the nasal air passage.
  • Lifestyle:  Alcohol, medications or even pregnancy could make a person snore. It is necessary to avoid alcohol especially before bed time, and eating excessively before retiring at night.

  • No separate bedrooms: I know some people might disagree with this, but I think sleeping in separate bedrooms, is not the right approach to the situation especially for couples. Although, you may find some sort of relief by sleeping separately from your snoring partner but the truth is that, slowly but surely, it would  take its toll on your relationship.
  • You could see a doctor together: If the snoring continues after trying out all the available options, you could both see a doctor together just to encourage your spouse. Seeing a doctor does not mean he or she is sick but visiting a specialist who would give the right advise is certainly the best option.
