Contrary to earlier suspicions that the Commander may have been assassinated, the police after investigation has revealed that the Naval Chief committed suicide.
An interim report on the investigation submitted by the Lagos State Police CID to the State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni on Tuesday and later communicated to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, reads:
Contrary to speculations by The Navy, family and Ijaw National Congress and Ijaw Youths Congress that he was assassinated, Admiral Ikoli committed suicide.
According to the reports, the Admiral had signed for a service pistol and 15 rounds of live ammunition for his personal use before his death.
"Investigation reveal that on the day of the incident, the Admiral fired two shots into the wall of his apartment.
"Neighbours who heard the shots called his wife, Hositela Ikoli, who is based in Abuja, and alerted the Western Navy Command.
"It was thereafter that he pulled the trigger again and shot himself in the head.
Detectives also confirmed that his apartment door was locked from behind and there was no sign of any intruder breaking in.
Investigation further revealed that only 12 rounds were left in the pistol indicating that he shot three out of the 15 rounds he had signed for.
According to the police source, his wife confirmed she was called and had spoken to him before the incident.
