Germany Has A New President

   


A new President has been chosen in Germany. Former German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was elected by a Parliamentary Assembly.

The 61 year old Democrats, a former lawyer, was chosen by a Federal Assembly in a parliament in Berlin, won 931 out of 1,260 votes.Although the post is ceremonial, The President has a duty to represent Germany abroad.
The Assembly consists of Lawmakers and representatives from various social fields delegated by Germany's 16 States. Mr Steinmeier has held the post of Foreign Minister  twice for 8 years under Chancellor Angela Merkel and is seen as Germany's most popular politician.The new President will take up his appointment on 19th of March.
