The Senate of The Federal Republic of Nigeria has asked the Nigerian Customs Service to put on hold its plans to collect duties on both old and new vehicles in the country.
The Senate in its resolution today, Tuesday, says the comptroller- General of the Nigerian customs , Hammed Ali, should appear before the House to explain the purpose of collecting old duties before any plans to effect it.
Recall that the Nigerian Customs Service had earlier announce a new deadline ( April 12), for all vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicle custom duties were paid accordingly before a proposed action would be embarked upon by the customs, on vehicle owners who failed to comply.
In a motion moved by the Deputy Senate majority leader Bala Ibn Na' Allah and seconded by Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West), the Lawmakers said it would be too tasking for people to start searching for Zonal offices of areas where their vehicles were bought many years back and more so it will be unfair to ask people who bought their cars from dealers who failed to make necessary duty payments, to suffer for the mistakes of such dealers.
