Deciduous  teeth, baby teeth, temporary teeth or milk teeth, they are the first set of teeth developed by all humans.

Many parents ignore caring for children's teeth because they believe it will certainly be replaced by the permanent one, so why bother?
If children's teeth are not properly cared for, it may result to cavities, tooth decay and/or gum infection called gingivitis which in turn may affect how the permanent teeth is spaced.

Dental hygiene starts from childhood. Children's teeth, should be given adequate attention just like those of adults. Dentist say healthy baby teeth will make healthy adult teeth too. Here are some tips on how to care for children's temporary teeth:

  • Begin the cleaning of the teeth even before it physically comes out. You can use a clean damp cloth to wipe  the gum.
  • Avoid leaving a bottle in baby's mouth for too long. Especially putting them to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. It could lead to discolouration of teeth or cavities.
  • After feed, always follow with  water, it helps  clean baby teeth by washing off food around the mouth.
  • As from 12 to 18 months, you can start using a soft tooth brush to clean baby's teeth without fluoride.
  • From 24 months start brushing twice a day with little quantity of  fluoride toothpaste to prevent cavities and mouth odour, ( children tend to swallow the flouride rather than spit it out, excess intake of floride  may lead to flourisis which is a medical condition where white spots appear on the permanent teeth).
  • Remember to change children's brush after at least 10 to 12 weeks
  • Visit a dentist.
