The CG was asked to appear before the senate in uniforms to clear the air on the proposed collection of custom duties on all vehicles in Nigeria, including the old ones. A step the Senate has asked the customs to suspend until the CG appears before it in uniforms to explain the reason behind the move.
The Customs CG defied the directive from the Senate and says it will continue with its proposed action to clamp down on all vehicles if the custom duties are not yet paid after April 12 deadline.
He has also told the senate he will never appear before it in uniform.
Speaking on live TV yesterday, (TVC), The Comptroller said the Senate should focus on performance of the Customs under him, rather than concerning itself with things like wearing of uniform.
"I will appear before the Senate because I've utmost respect for the nation's legislature. But as regards to uniform wearing or not, the answer is no, because I was not appointed Comptroller General to wear uniforms."
"We expect them to proffer suggestions for us on how to do our jobs better, not issues like wearing of uniform or not."
"On issues like uniform wearing; Does uniform do the work or the person behind the uniform? Are my doing my job or not? I think those are the questions that should bother the Senate more, rather than mundane issues like uniform wearing."
